Sonia’s movement experience started from a young age having practiced yoga for most of her life. It has provided Sonia with a solid foundation in movement practice and a constant journey of enquiry and discovery that is ever evolving.
Sonia has practiced Pilates since 2004 and qualified as a matwork instructor with Body Control Pilates (London) in 2011. In 2011, Sonia’s movement journey also led her to the Gyrotonic Method, qualifying as a Gyrokinesis instructor in Germany in 2017. Gyrokinesis is a movement method which has gained in popularity across the UK (already established strongly in Europe and America) with some world renowned athletes - such as Andy Murray and Tiger Woods - advocating its benefits.
Gyrokinesis combines the core-strengthening benefits of Pilates, the flexibility of yoga, the grace of dance, the fluidity of swimming, and the energy lift of tai chi in one simple, dynamic routine. It uses your body’s natural spherical and spiraling movement patterns to decompress and strengthen your entire spine. Each movement flows into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring and targeting more muscle groups.
Sonia has taught across Edinburgh and has been working as an Instructor within Balanced since 2011. She has her own personal experience of back trauma having suffered a herniated disc and nerve related side effects. What Sonia finds most rewarding is enabling clients to build greater awareness and understanding of their movement patterns and where those patterns may be unhelpful or restrictive.
Sonia maintains a regular self-practice ensuring that she is continuously working with some of the best teacher trainers across Pilates, Yoga and Gyrokinesis in this country and abroad. She values being able to share with clients this knowledge and experience to help them achieve their movement objectives.
Fun and Positive
Sonia's pilates and Gyrokinesis classes are always fun and positive. Sonia is very knowledgeable and draws on her background in different disciplines to create classes that are flexible and tailored to the individual students - definitely not your standard exercise class experience. The Gyrokinesis class is a great way to wake up the body on a Sunday morning, and I've really seen the benefits in flexibility, coordination and core strength.
I have been attending Sonia's Gyrokinesis class on a Sunday for the past 2 years. It is a general level class and I am impressed by the way that Sonia is able to explain the technical issues to new attendees whilst ensuring that those of us with more experience are also challenged. Sonia is friendly and supportive but also focussed on correcting technical errors giving all members of the class sufficient 1 to 1 attention. At first sight Gyrokinesis looks like exercise for softies but I would encourage you to try the class, done properly it is tougher than you think.
Made a real difference
I have been attending Gyro classes with Sonia for two years. They have made a real difference to my movement and core strength. Sonia is a great teacher, making the movements easy to understand whatever your level and she also makes the classes very enjoyable.
