About me

I became an occupational therapist because I believe functioning and participation in activities is key to the healing process. I grew up with Rheumatoid arthritis and sitting out on games day was always frustrating, so I endeavoured to ensure that no-one would have to sit out of anything.
If we can’t be involved in activity our mind and body is affected and ill health sets in. I believe in engaging the mind and body to enable and motivate individuals in therapy. I strive to use a goal orientated approach in therapy and ensure that individuals set goals and achieve them.

Expertise

Joanne’s expertise lies in her detailed approach and careful planning of activities to ensure function is maximised. She is a keen observer of movement and listens carefully to what matters to you.

Experience

Joanne has over 27 years of experience in healthcare, having worked across hospital settings, community services, and third sector organisations. She is currently the Director of her own independent Occupational Therapy practice, where she supports clients in their homes to enhance function and independence through personalised rehabilitation, as well as the provision of aids and adaptations.
In addition to her clinical work, Joanne provides case management and expert witness services, and carries out associate work with a mental health clinic in Edinburgh, where she supports individuals with dyspraxia, sensory processing difficulties and promotes effective lifestyle management.
Joanne also works part-time at Spire Healthcare as an Occupational Therapist, where she coordinates complex discharges and helps ensure optimal recovery and outcomes following surgery.
Joanne has extensive experience supporting individuals with a wide range of conditions, including musculoskeletal disorders such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, orthopaedic injuries, and post-operative recovery. She also works with clients experiencing Chronic Pain and neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease, Functional Neurological Disorder, and Dementia, as well as those with sensory processing challenges, Dyspraxia, Autism, and ADHD.
Earlier in her career, Joanne worked extensively within community services across Lothian, focusing on facilitating hospital discharge and prevention of admission for adult clients.

Life outside work

Outside work I like to swim, cycle, walk and try my hand at craft activities. I also bake a “mean” chocolate mud cake.

My favourite thing

My favourite things would be swimming in large ponds and taking my dog on long walks. Finishing off the day with a meal out with my husband and children would be perfect.
