About me
I decided I wanted to be a physio at the age of 14 - it seemed to be an ideal job for someone who was interested in science, working with people, and keeping active. Over 30 years later I would still say it is the ideal job! It’s varied and interesting to treat a wide range of ages and conditions, and the therapy we give can make a huge difference to the lives of those we treat. A combined approach of various hands-on treatment, together with self-management and exercises can be extremely effective in reducing pain, and improving function. As a therapist it is so rewarding to witness the change that our treatment can bring about, especially when clients are motivated to work hard and maximise their own recovery.
Expertise
Julie has gained experience in the assessment and treatment of a broad range of conditions throughout her NHS and private work. She really enjoys treating the elderly, and those with longer term rehabilitation requirements. Having been involved in triathlon over a number of years she has developed an interest in treating triathlon and running related injuries. She is qualified to practice acupuncture and uses this in addition to other techniques where relevant. In 2020 she undertook training to work with womens’ health clients, and has since enjoyed developing her experience and knowledge within this field.Experience
Julie qualified as a physiotherapist in 1993. The first few years of her career were based in the NHS. In 2000 she did an MSc in musculoskeletal physiotherapy in Australia. She started work in private practice, briefly in Australia and then continued on her return to Edinburgh, and worked in a couple of different Edinburgh based practices before starting at Balanced in 2014.Life outside work
