The Mighty Blackcurrant

My neighbour’s garden has an abundance of fruit just ripe for picking, including some beautiful blackcurrants. They are often difficult to find on supermarket shelves or greengrocers, but it is worth hunting these down at this time of year as they are delicious and packed full of goodness. Try them with your porridge or with yoghurt in the mornings. They also make a lovely cordial or for those that like a little tipple, black currant liquor or cassis is very easy to make with lots of recipes available online.

Nutritional Value:

The mighty blackcurrant really packs a punch in nutritional value as they are filled with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, all of which provide major health benefits.

Blackcurrants have one of the highest antioxidant values for fruit and these antioxidants fight free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress and cell damage.

Blackcurrants are also high in vitamin C, which plays a vital role in the health and functioning of your immune system.

Be careful not to overdo blackcurrant consumption if you take blood thinning medications or if you have low blood pressure or take blood pressure medications.
