How Balanced Hypnotherapy Works

Many people believe that Hypnotherapy is something that is “done” to them, that they explain their issue to the therapist who then simply hypnotises their problem away, as if by magic.

Hypnotherapy is a much more collaborative process and it is important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.

The initial consultation is designed to assess what you want to achieve, how hypnotherapy can help you and how many sessions you are likely to need. Subsequent Hypnotherapy sessions involve much more than Hypnosis. During the first part of each session we’ll talk about the progress you have made and I’ll be encouraging you to express yourself positively, focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems.

We help you to imagine your preferred future, a future where you have a more useful perspective on the quality of your life. You would then be guided into a relaxed state of Hypnosis so that we can consolidate what we have discussed.

What is Psychotherapy?

There are many different kinds of Psychotherapy, all of which aim to help people overcome stress or emotional problems. Psychotherapy involves talking together to help clients overcome their difficulties. Psychotherapy is often referred to as a talking treatment.

What to expect

Solution Focused Psychotherapy is future oriented

The type of Psychotherapy we practise is Solution Focused Therapy Techniquesand is designed to reduce anxiety and calm the mind. As the name suggests it focuses on solutions for the future, rather than analysing problems of the past.

Provided you are willing to make changes to the way you think, the therapy can be highly effective in relieving the symptoms of anxiety and stress. Focusing on solutions means we do not dwell on problems.

Instead we:

  • acknowledge where you are currently
  • identify where you want to be
  • help you to make the necessary changes.

Solution Focused Psychotherapy avoids problem talk:

The type of Psychotherapy we practise does not involve analysing painful memories from the past. If you have experienced unpleasant events, we acknowledge they happened and help you get from where you are to where you want to be.

The Hypno-CBT® model is an integration of social, cognitive and behavioural psychology and psychotherapy with a contemporary approach to hypnosis. Hypno-CBT® is an “evidence-based” approach to hypnotherapy. The approach is esteemed within the profession and is widely known for its scientific approach as well as being accredited and recognized by several of the leading organizations in the field including:

The methods used are based on research into the characteristics of hypnosis and clinical research into the efficacy of hypnosis, CBT, mindfulness and the integration of hypnosis and CBT. The fusion of hypnosis, CBT and mindfulness generates a powerful toolset that creates an integrated mind-body psychotherapy approach which helps clients to effect deeper and longer lasting change, healing the divide that exists between mind & body (psychology & physiology).

Advancements in techniques and our understanding have concentrated on the combination of hypnotherapy and CBT.  An influential publication in 1996 by Irvine Kirsch et al.  compared the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural hypnotherapy to CBT alone – the study found that in 70-90% of clients, cognitive and behavioural therapies were more successful when combined with hypnosis.  This means that for the majority of people cognitive-behavioural hypnotherapy is superior to CBT alone. Alladin and Alibhai (2007), study on CBT compared to CBT with hypnosis for depression also found that the CBT with hypnosis was surpassed CBT alone.

What is Hypnosis like?

We all experience the Hypnotic state in our everyday lives. When you are deeply engrossed in a book or a film, you are experiencing a hypnotic trance. Many people slip into a hypnotic trance when driving. We can drive for many miles without consciously thinking, without even realising that we are driving. However, we know that if any emergency occurs when driving in this state, we can immediately snap out of it and take the appropriate action. So many of you will have experienced trance many times and knows how it feels. It is not at all strange, magical or mysterious; it is calming, relaxing and very pleasant.

During Hypnosis you will be guided into a similar state so that beneficial suggestion can be directed towards your subconscious mind.

What Hypnosis is

Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention. In this relaxed state, your mind is more responsive to suggestion. In a therapeutic setting, the suggestions are designed to be beneficial to help you change unhelpful thought patterns. Clients often comment about how “ordinary” Hypnosis feels – it’s not unlike daydreaming – you can often hear everything that is being said whilst in a deeply relaxed state. In fact, you could think of it as guided daydreaming.

What Hypnosis is not

Contrary to the image portrayed in films, books and the media, Hypnosis does not involve the therapist taking control of your mind – no one can Hypnotise you against your will. Nobody can make you do anything you do not want to – your subconscious mind will simply reject any suggestion that is inappropriate for you.

What Hypnotherapy can help you with

Hypnotherapy treatments can help with confidence and self-esteem problems. It can also help in the treatment of depression and anxiety, including panic attacks, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Phobias such as spiders, needles, flying and public speaking can be minimised, along with painful memories and traumatic experiences. It has proved very successful with pain management, weight management & sleep issues. If your condition or issue is not listed please call to discuss how we could help.
